Community Involvement
Community service has always been an integral part of Scherzinger Pest Control. Our company motto which is displayed in our lobby - "to be a good company to buy from to sell to - - to work for - - and to improve and support the community" - best defines our mission as a service organization.
While planning for the 50th anniversary of Scherzinger Pest Control, Steve Scherzinger contacted the Cincinnati Zoological Insectarium concerning a possible mutual project to celebrate the anniversary. Milan Bushing, the Curator of the Insectarium, expressed a desire to have a Central American Termite Exhibit. However, because of a lack of funds, the project was impossible. We became very excited about the exhibit and committed to fully fund the acquisition of the termites plus the entire cost of the construction of the permanent exhibit. We also committed to run yearly promotions offering discount admissions to the Zoo to encourage viewing of the world class exhibit.
During the years of 1992, 1994 and 1996 Scherzinger Pest Control acted as Corporate Sponsor for Jazzercise for the Children that was produced by Kindervelt. During the three years that the event was held, the net proceeds exceeded $65000.00 for the benefit of The Children's Hospital Medical Center. The employees of Scherzinger Pest Control also worked with Kindervelt to attract and sign up participants to help in the success of this very worthwhile community event.
During a 1994 monthly planning meeting of the management of Scherzinger Pest Control, the discussion of the 60th anniversary developed an idea to approach the Krohn Conservatory in Eden Park about a joint project. Steve Scherzinger contacted Ruth Ann Spears, Curator of the Krohn Conservatory, and the idea of an outside butterfly garden was hatched. Scherzinger Pest Control provided the funding along with volunteers to construct the garden in an area that had been forgotten about and over grown for years along the walkway from the parking lot of the Krohn Conservatory. School children raised butterflies to be released at the dedication ceremony for the garden, held in conjunction with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.
The association with the Krohn Conservatory and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful has been an ongoing relationship since 1994. In addition to sponsoring the Krohn's annual Butterfly Show, Scherzinger Pest Control through Keep Cincinnati Beautiful has sponsored and provided volunteers to construct butterfly gardens annually at six area schools. After the gardens are planted, a Scherzinger representative works with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful and the school in their litter prevention and beautification outreach training. Since 1998 Scherzinger Pest Control has also dedicated a butterfly garden at a community center each year. The recipients the previous years have been the Hyde Park Community Center and the Dante Evans Brown & Darrell Lane Ballfields in the Bond Hill Community. The 2000 recipient is the Playfield at Lunken Airport.
During 1999 the butterfly garden at the Krohn Conservatory was recognized by the Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati as the Best Civic Beautification around a public building. Steve Scherzinger was also recognized with the Civic Beautification Leadership Award for his work with the Krohn Conservatory and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.
Industry and State Involvement
The Scherzinger Family is the first family in the pest control industry to have all three generations serve as president of a state pest control association. We have always felt that it is good business practice to work towards improving the ethics and professionalism of our industry.
Bernard Scherzinger was one of the founding members of the Ohio Pest Control Association and served as president during the early years.
R. Edward Scherzinger during his term as president worked with the Ohio Department of Agriculture in developing the certification testing and process for Pest Control Operators.
Steve Scherzinger developed a scholarship fund through the association to promote the study of urban entomology. In addition while serving as president, Steve enlisted the support of a major pest control supplier and the membership of the association to participate in the statewide Special Olympics held at The Ohio State University. Ohio Pest Control Association volunteers serve over 83,000 cups of ice water and orange juice at the drink booth in "Tent Town" where the Special Olympians are encouraged to go after competing. Steve Scherzinger still helps co-ordinate these two programs.
Steve Scherzinger has also served the National Pest Control Association in various capacities. During the late 1980's Mr. Scherzinger served on the Chemical Safety Committee and the Marketing Management Committee. Both committees were recognized as the committee of the year during Mr. Scherzinger's tenure. He also served on the Board of Directors from 1988 through 1991 and is presently nominated for the board for the years 2000 through 2003.
Employees of Scherzinger Pest Control are encouraged to be a part of their community. In addition to various church and school groups they are involved with, Scherzinger Employees are also involved with the following community groups and civic associations: Cincinnati Park Foundation, Miami Glen Association, Second Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation, Rotary Club, Tender Mercy Mission, City of Hope Hospital, Boy Scouts.
