IDENTIFYING BED BUGS

LEARN TO RECOGNIZE ALL THE SIGNS AND SIGNALS OF BED BUGS.

Missing the evidence they leave behind or mistakenly attributing their bites to another pest gives bed bugs time to spread. Knowing where and what to look for can help prevent a full-blown infestation, supplying you with the necessary information that signals when it’s time to call the professionals at ScherZinger.

Because bed bug bites can resemble those of mosquitoes and fleas, or even look like a rash, hives or eczema, the most accurate way to identify their presence is to look for physical traces. When cleaning, changing bedding or traveling, look for:

  • Dark spots on bedding much like the dot of a bleeding marker, which are their excrement and the earliest, most accurate sign of their presence
  • Rusty or reddish stains on sheets or mattresses caused by crushed bed bugs
  • Eggs or eggshells, which are white, extremely tiny and resemble a speck of dust, usually only visible using a magnifying glass or flashlight
  • Skin casings that are shed as bed bugs mature
  • Live, crawling bed bugs:
    • Adults are about 1/8-inch long, oval shaped and flat, approximately the size of an apple seed
    • Their color tends to be reddish-brown, but depends on when they last fed
    • Early in the nymph state, they are smaller (the size of a poppy seed) and a lighter tan color
    • Both adults and juveniles appear swollen and larger after eating, and are wingless with six legs and two antennae not longer than their bodies

Bed bugs cannot fly, but in maturity are capable of very fast movement especially when a light is turned on. To spot them, try using a flashlight in a dark room – switch it on and point to potential hiding areas. If you see any bed bugs or their marks, contact your hometown experts at ScherZinger – we’ll take care of your problem quickly, discretely and effectively.
